Why is Long-Word Decoding Important?

In late elementary school, children read more challenging books, with longer and more difficult words. Instruction in long-word decoding teaches children to read these words with greater confidence and ease by breaking them into smaller word parts.

How Does this Program Teach Long-Word Decoding?

Each class includes formal skills instruction using a self-paced long-word decoding workbook. Your son or daughter will learn how to recognize prefixes, suffixes, and syllables in long words and use these word parts to decode words. Students also learn and practice a four-step strategy for reading long words that they can use in all of their independent reading. As a result, your child will develop the strong long-word decoding skills needed to read with complete fluency in more challenging material.
